چکیده

M a i n r e s u l t s 32 studies (5562 patients) were included. Sample sizes ranged from 28 to 382 patients (mean 179 patients). The length of follow-up ranged from 4 to 48 weeks (mean 10 wk). When studies were pooled, the mean severity of depressive symptoms was lower for venlafaxine than for other antidepressants (Table). When grouped by drug class, venlafaxine was more effective than selectiveserotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) but did not differ from tricyclic agents (TCAs) or other drugs (Table). A similar treatment effect was seen for response and remission rates (Table). Venlafaxine did not differ from other antidepressants for total dropout rates.

Efficacy and tolerability of venlafaxine compared with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and other antidepressants: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND In individual studies and limited meta-analyses venlafaxine has been reported to be more effective than comparator antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). AIMS To perform a systematic review of all such studies. METHOD We conducted a systematic review of double-blind, randomised trials comparing venlafaxine with alternative antidepressants i...

Clinical experience with dual action antidepressants in different chronic pain syndromes.

A common psychopharmacology between pain and depression suggests that compounds inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and/or noradrenaline are likely to produce relief from chronic pain. Indeed tricyclic antidepressants have been a standard treatment of chronic pain for many years. In spite of their improved tolerance, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors do not appear to be particularly effe...

A Review of the Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors: Pharmacologic Aspects and Clinical Implications for Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder and Associated Painful Physical Symptoms

Background: Depression is characterized by low mood, low self-esteem, and loss of interest or pleasure. Painful physical symptoms (PPS) associated with depression have a negative impact on the probability of remission. Because both norepinephrine and serotonin are involved with the central regulation of pain, the serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) may have more success than th...

Milnacipran: a unique antidepressant?

Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are among the most effective antidepressants available, although their poor tolerance at usual recommended doses and toxicity in overdose make them difficult to use. While selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are better tolerated than TCAs, they have their own specific problems, such as the aggravation of sexual dysfunction, interaction with coadminis...
